Half Dome – Yosemite Musing
The annual Yosemite Conservancy Spring Forum will be held Saturday, March 26 at the Valley Visitor Center’s Auditorium. Actually, the event used to be the called the Yosemite Association Spring Forum, but since its merger with the Yosemite Fund, they now are using the new name. If you are an old YA or YF member – whala! You are now a YC member. We are still waiting to see the process for renewal. I am a member of both. I hope they will announce this at the meeting.
The event draws a good crowd – upwards of 200 Yosemite groupies attend. Old and young, but mostly those who really care about the park show up. Many benefactors are there. These are the big buck donors. Did you know you can put Yosemite in your will? (Heck, you can put me in your will.) We all wear nametags to facilitate conversation. A highlight is the annual “State of the Park” kind of talk given by the Superintendent. Don Neubacher will take the mic at 9 am. There are nature walks, trekking pole seminars by the lovely and talented Jayah Faye Paley, Ranger talks and a ton of activities go on during the day.
Plan to arrive Friday the 25th and stay until Sunday if you can. It sure beats driving up at the crack of dark and buzzing home. There is plenty of networking that can be done. I try to attend every year. Look for me and let’s talk Half Dome. Although HD is not on the formal agenda now, I’m hoping we will get an update on the Half Dome Stewardship Planning and the HD Permit process. By then all the May / June permits will be given out. Click <HERE> for a complete agenda of activities.
Permit Update – The NPS is working on the recreation.gov website. Half Dome is now listed under the PERMIT (not as a TOUR as in 2010). But things are still mushy. Here is the message I got – I hope to the 7th moon of Thor that it’s all in place BEFORE March 1.
ATTENTION: The Permits for Half Dome will be available on March 1, 2011 at 10am (ET). Currently the facility is under construction. Sorry for the inconvenience. Please check back on March 1, 2011.
