I just got back from the big Outdoor Retailer Trade show in Salt Lake City. 1,400 manufacturers met buyers for order placing for Spring products. About 30,000 attend at the Salt Palace. It’s not open to the public.
I’ll be blogging about new products I saw to share. And there is some neat stuff heading to market. The show is eye candy for any outdoor enthusiast. Apparel, backpacks, sleeping backs, hiking poles, kayaks, boots, etc. etc. all in booths for buyers.
I did a book signing on Friday and had a good turnout set up by my publisher, Wilderness Press.
A big thrill for me was when Hans Florine came up for a book. Hans is a major speed climber. He just set a record for going up El Cap with Alex Honnold in 2 hours, 23 minutes and 46 seconds. That beat the old record by 13 minutes!!! Yeow. Florine has climbed El Capitan 147 times, and the Nose route 77 times. He’s 48 – a young man. I felt honored that he wanted a copy of a mere hiking guide to Half Dome. We chatted and he gave me a one of his new books on Speed Climbing. He was doing a book signing also for another publisher.
Unrelated thought worth quoting: “We went a little cautious for the first four of the 32 pitches (segments of the climb) … At half way, we were nine minutes faster than our time on Thursday. I knew that we could comfortably coast in and beat the record.” – Hans Florine
