Oprah does Yosemite

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing

Wonder who that woman was bounding around the park with all the handlers? The one and only Oprah Winfrey!  She toured the park early in October at the invite of Park Ranger Shelton Johnson. He regularly portrays Elizy Bowman, a fictitious member of the old Buffalo Soldiers.

This Friday and Monday, October 29 and November 1, Oprah will devote two entire shows to her overnight camping trip in Yosemite.  While in the park, Shelton participated in an evening campfire chat with her while she stayed at the Lower Pines Campground. The shows highlight her visit to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, Tunnel View, a mule ride, and fly fishing on the Merced River.

Unrelated thought worth quoting: “How can you explain that you need to know that the trees are still there, and the hills and the sky?  Anyone knows they are.  How can you say it is time your pulse responded to another rhythm, the rhythm of the day and the season instead of the hour and the minute?  No, you cannot explain.  So you walk.” – Author unknown

Elizy Boman, Buffalo Soldier in Yosemite, is a real person.

Ranger Johnson found his name on a list of buffalo soldiers who served in Yosemite.

Much of the one-man show is the creative work of Ranger Johnson, and he gave Boman a promotion to Sergeant, but there is a real name behind the wonderful re-enactment/composite.

Bet if the book got the O club endorsement, it could sell 8000 in a day. Call it “Oprah’s Best Hike in Yosemite.”

My guess is that at 11 pm Oprah was moved to a Suite at the Ahwahnee.

Did she go to the back country at all? You had no advance notice she would be at yosemite? Pics and discussions with her would have been great for your book. She could have taken a mule up jmt to see Nevada Fall.

      • Sönke says:

She did a fairly good job finishing a marathon so HD would be a piece of cake for her. And for a rich person it’s pretty easy to get in shape for EVERYTHING within a short period of time.

If she’ll ever appear in Rick’s book I’ll never talk to him again. 😉
        And burn his book…

      • mrhalfdome says:

Gee, if I could get on her final show…. everyone in the audience gets a free copy of the book and I retire to Monaco!

The pages of the book were imbedded with Zylon 2341, a Kevlar derivative (developed by NASA) which makes the pages look like paper but are reistant to flames. (In case the thought police didn’t like it.)

You think O stayd out til 11 pacific time? I would think she retired to her hotel @ 6ish.

    • john says:

No invitation to be a guest ok her show?

  5. john says:

Hmmm, think oprah could make the day trip up half dome?
