Hans Florine and Alex Honnold are claiming a speed record of sorts. The largest age spread between 2 climbers going up the nose of El Cap under 4 hours. Alex at 26 and Hans at 47 is quite a difference. Like father – son. They said they will try to break the 2-man speed climb in the next few days if the weather holds. Head on up to the El Cap meadow with your lawn chair and binocs. Kinda like watching a movie. In fact they are being filmed so if you can’t be there, save your dinero for the DVD one of these days. There’s one out of the German Huber Brothers when they did it.
Now for some realistic footage of AVERAGE people, take a peek at my YouTube video of going up Half Dome with my head-mounted GoPro camera. I check the numbers occasionally and over 3,000 have viewed. I think the secret of getting a lot of interest is to put “death” “fall” “accident” etc. in the title. People are really blood thirsty. Well, no gore in mine. Just honest cable pulling.
Production notes: I wanted to get the whole climb in one YouTube session – 15 mins is all they allow. Most of the others I’ve seen are mearly segments of the climb or they put on stills. You can see me approach form the saddle and get all the way up – so that;s the title. All the Way up. I took in in June 2009 when the crowds were bigger before permits, so don;t get turned off. My PC video editing skills are bad and I did not find the PC based video tools very easy. So I got a MacBook and used Apple’s iMovie – heaven. finally the camera is great – has a wide angle lens so the edges are NOT as steep as they appear. Lean forward.
Unrelated thought worth quoting: “As long as I live, I’ll hear waterfalls and birds and winds sing. I’ll interpret the rocks, learn the language of flood, storm, and the avalanche. I’ll acquaint myself with the glaciers and wild gardens, and get as near the heart of the world as I can.” – John Muir
