April 21 is John Muir’s birthday. He’d be 173 this year. Did you know that Earth Day is celebrated each year on the third weekend of April – to coincide as closely as possible with John Muir’s birthday? On Earth Day weekend, admission to all the National Parks, EVERYWHERE in the United States, is FREE.
The big party will be at the John Muir National Historic Site in Martinez on Saturday, April 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The visitor center there has been under renovation since January. It will create a larger lobby and new exhibits to educate the public about the life and achievements of conservationist John Muir. The house and grounds will remain open during the four month renovation, with the visitor center and bookstore temporarily moved into a trailer in the parking lot. Construction is set to finish by mid-May. I went to the party 2 years go and had a great time.
Admission and parking to the party is FREE! The John Muir National Historic Site is located at 4202 Alhambra Avenue at Highway 4 in Martinez, California. For information click <HERE>.
Muir’s descendents, the Hanna’s, run a winery and are offering a MUIR’S BIRTHDAY WINE BLOWOUT! – $90 a case on April 16, 17 & 18. Legacy Vineyards (Bill Hanna is John Muir’s Great-Grandson), is in Murphy’s. Their tasting room is at 260 Jones Street.
Mark down April 18, 9 pm for a PBS special John Muir in the New World. You can see a preview <HERE>. Lots of neat Yosemite shots.
