Today we give a shout out to Scott Gehrman, Director of Lasting Adventures Guide Service. Scott’s company is a favorite at the Yosemite for multi-day and even one-day jaunts up Half Dome. As a registered non-profit company, Lasting Adventures is able to provide quality guided tours at a very reasonable price. Profits from the business go towards a scholarship fund to help disadvantaged youth participate in outdoor adventures. I occasionally join their Half Dome adventure to provide “color and play-by-play.” I love giving history, geology and fun vignettes as we hike to the summit.
Scott’s team of certified guides strictly follow the requirements for NPS guides complete with the appropriate CPR and wilderness first aid training.
Each is skilled in making sure the tours are safe and fun. I know first-hand that if conditions are not safe, they will not go up Half Dome. That includes not risking off-season summits when the pipes and boards are removed. Less than six years ago two independent women hikers fell and died 6-months apart doing that.
Scott just celebrated his 40th birthday; officially entering middle-age. But to his credit in all his years of personal hiking and professional guiding, he estimates he has gone up Half Dome now over 100 times. In recognition, his staff dubbed him “King of Half Dome.” Well deserved. Hiking and backpacking continue well into the fall at Yosemite before the snows come. Give Lasting Adventuresa call – tell them “Mr Half Dome” sent you!
Unrelated thought worth quoting: “You say it’s your birthday. It’s my birthday too, yeah. They say it’s your birthday, We’re gonna have a good time. I’m glad it’s your birthday, Happy Birthday to you.” – the Beatles.
