Half Dome hikers and Big Wall Yosemite climbers are kindred spirits. I don’t do the ladder, but admire those with guts enough to go up 2,000 – 3,000 vertical feet. They are having a fund raiser to replace old, rusted bolts that hang on many western walls. The American Safe Climbing Association and SuperTopo (the climber’s website) has a project to replace unsafe bolts. In 2010, the ASCA provided 750 bolts in Yosemite Valley, another 150 bolts in Tuolumne and hundreds other in popular western US sites like Red Rocks, NV and Joshua Tree, CA.
If you are near San Francisco on Wednesday, April 27, you are invited to come to Planet Granite for their Fundraising Auction! Many vendors have donated outdoor and climbing goods. I’m tossing a copy of my Half Dome hiking book. A presentation will be given by climber Alex Honnold.
He is the man who has gone up the face of Half Dome FREE SOLO in 2008. That means alone with no ropes or other support. And he did it in under 3 hours. A typical trip for climbers is 3-4 days! Also, Chris McNamara of SuperTopo and founder of the ASCA will be there. Between April 15th and 30th, Planet Granite is matching donations dollar for dollar up to $10,000. The event is at 924 Mason Street. For more info, click <HERE>.
