Heat stroke

Sobering topic today. The above photos show a 26 –year old woman who we found collapsed on the Half Dome trail just below Sub Dome above the forest. She was conscious but very hot. We cooled her down and moved her to the shade. Then she started shivering. Her whole body was chilled. We quickly covered her with extra clothes. Someone had a knit hat. We wrapped her in a plastic poncho. Her hands were like ice. Upon talking to her it was clear she had not drank much water all day.  She was on the verge of sinking dangerously deeper into major problems. We gave her electrolyte fluids.  She drank about a quart in 10 minutes. We had a cell phone and I called 911. I relayed her condition, allergies and history. Using my cell coordinates, they knew exactly where we were.  A ranger was dispatched from Little Yosemite Valley. All turned out well – in fact we later saw the woman at the Curry Pizza Shack. She had recovered just fine. Aalthough she finished her hike near 10 pm. The clear message is: DRINK! Hydrate or collapse!
