I stayed at the Curry Village Canvas Tent cabins in August. I just received an email from our buddies at recreation.gov. Wow, if they are sending these out to everyone who stayed in Curry, that’s a lot of emails. Better safe than sorry. Here’s the main message:
As you may be aware, Yosemite has been in the news recently related to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), a rare but serious disease that occurs throughout the United States, usually in rural areas. Your recent overnight visit to Yosemite did not include a stay in lodging where the known hantavirus infections might have occurred; however, we wanted to take this opportunity to increase public awareness about hantavirus. We are contacting you as the reservation holder and we ask you to share the following information with the rest of your party.
It continues with the now common advice: watch for flu-like symptoms.
The park has aggressively been trapping deer mice in Curry Village. Here’s the deal: traps with peanut butter were set out between Aug. 21 – 23. These were in the Boystown area where the signature tent cabins are. Half the traps caught mice. With about 14% had or have had hantavirus.
Between Sept. 4 – 6, traps were set in Curry Village and in Tuolumne Meadows, where 45% of the traps caught mice. Results could take months to complete. One theory for the large number of mice is that Curry has attracted an easy source of food – Homo Sapiens. We tend to drop a lot of scraps for the little guys to munch on. More litter = more mice = more hantavirus. Plus mice predators tend to shy away from all the people there. Makes you think.
