Half Dome – Yosemite Musing
Continuing the freaks of nature theme, I snapped this shot of another boulder wedged in between 2 larger rocks just east of Bridalview Fall. And no, I don’t think there is a band of Gleeps going around arranging these as an alternative to crop circles.
Then on top of Half Dome, if you walk west over the hump the look towards the face, you will see this pancake stack of slabs.
How in the heck did they get here? This one I can explain. As the pluton of granite rose and cooled, it slowly curved with the outer surfaces continuing to expand. Like an onion skin, the rock cracked into layers. Erosion and exfoliation slowly peeled the exterior rocks away. What we see are not individual rocks, but the layering effect. I think.
