I don’t write many product reviews but I needed to tell yall about a new boot insole that is pretty good. I met the founders of Cadence Insoles out of Nipomo, CA. I can’t say I’ve ever heard of the place, but John Hinds, his wife and young daughter were at the Wildflower Triathlon Expo with a booth 2 weeks ago and were showing their new alternative insole. John has over 2 decades as a physical therapist focusing on orthopedic and sports rehabilitation. He came up with the idea for a better mousetrap – er, insole. While the focus of his website is on running, the insoles are great for anyone who uses their feet for locomotion (duh). Like us hikers.

For some reason, boot makers provide thin cardboard insoles with their boots. Me thinks it’s because if they put in a decent insole, the price of their boots would jump $50. So they basically pass that on to us. Manypeople just hike with those, but I like to swap mine out for more cushion. The Cadence units fit into my Vasque Breeze size 13’s just fine. I trimmed them to the same length as my factory insoles.

I hiked Mission Peak twice now with them I can honestly say I do like them. Better than my current orange insoles. The cush was very noticeable and the heel was grabbed securely. The website goes into the whys and wherefores of the need for good insoles. How about when hiking to Half Dome, you can be putting 5 times the force of your body onto your feet with each step. For cushioning, the Cadence closed cell polyurethane retains its cushioning properties much longer than EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) or open cell polyurethane. These insoles are $40 and can be bought on-line at the website.

Other news: Be careful of a throng of bicyclists up in the Gold Country - the AMGEN CA tour will be in and around Sonora this week.

First, a shout out to the folks who came to my talk at REI Brentwood Thursday. A tip of the hat to Karen the Outreach manager there for a great set up. Being a dolt, I forgot my laptop power cord under the projection table. I had to go back out Saturday to get it. An almost 90-minute drive from San Jose-by-the-sea. I tend to forget things so now I have an address label on all my toys.

2011 was a busy year for the crack Yosemite SAR team. There were 889 incidents requiring EMS help. 202 bona fide SAR events with full protocol in effect. 88 “Major SARs” involving multiple agencies on significant efforts and 15 fatalities in the year. The 202 SARS cost $640K. The highest in recent years was in 2005 when the 231 SARS cost $1.2M.

The rescue methods employed included: Self-rescues, crutches with a hike out, litter & wheel carryout, ski-sled/snow machine, high angle raise or lower, helicopter, swiftwater and horse.

Our thoughts are with the owners of the Mariposa businesses whose establishments were destroyed by the horrible fire Friday night. I hope they had insurance. This photo was taken by the Sierra Sun Times.…

The California Spanish explorers encountered a free flowing river coming down from the Sierra into the Central Valley. It fed the growing agricultural needs of the population. They named this river for Mary, “Our Lady of Mercy.” We now call it the Merced . . . the same river that hugs the John Muir Trail as we hike Half Dome.

In the early years of the park the river often flooded. Early settlers, led by Galen Clark, dynamited the glacial moraine at the Valley entrance near El Cap / Bridalveil Fall, lowering the water table. Water was used by the grazing livestock. Closer to Yosemite Falls, the Yosemite C reek was diverted east a bit to power a sawmill that Muir worked at. He even lived in a hut attached to it. Check out this photo of Muir’s “hangnest.” When you stroll near Yosemite Falls, you can see where we think it was located. Water does not flow by there today.

Gone in the blaze are the Mariposa Pizza Factory, Pony Expresso Coffee House & Trading Post, Tracy’s Yarns, Larry’s Coins, Grace Notes Chimes, Mariposa County Arts Council and Windows on the World Bookstore. I’ve blogged about how great the Pony Expresso and the Bookstore were. I know the owners and this is tragic. The cause is not known but smoke was first seen coming out of the attic of the pizza parlor just before 9 pm. The building at Hwy 140 and 5th Ave is made of over 100 year old wood and went up fast. Damage is estimated at over $1M. No one was hurt. Sad, very sad.

The Yosemite Conservancy just announced the installation and operation of a new webcam pointing at Yosemite Falls. So now you can look at the highest waterfall in North America and the 5th highest in the world anytime you want. The camera snaps a still shot every 3 minutes or so. We can take turns monitoring it for hats and cameras falling over the edge.
So who has permits for May 25 – Opening Day at Half Dome? The countdown is a bit over 2 weeks. I hope yall trained. If you go, send us a summary of how it went. Now that the temps are creeping into the 80’s at the park, the snow is burning off. The 2-mile “Half Dome Trail” willbe accessible soon and Sub Dome clear. I want to take this time to ask that you DO NOT go up the ROCK until the cables are installed. Some foolhardy death wishers go up just rappelling with the steel cable.
It’s pretty much business as usual at Yosemite. Roads are open and attractions are ready to rock and roll. Even the “ice cut” section of the John Muir Trail (between Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall) has opened for the season. Yosemite Valley Stables began the half-day rides to Clarks Point. The Glacier Point and Grand Tours have begun service for the season. The Grand Tour is an 8-hour tour that runs through Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point, Wawona and to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. The tour departs daily from Yosemite Lodge at 8:45 AM. The Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias is open and the trams are running! A free Shuttle available from the Wawona Store Parking lot.

If you are on Northside Drive, Southside Drive and the Valley Floor, crews will be striping and painting stencils for about a week.

If you come into the park via Hwy 140 thru Mariposa, you may want to know that the Shell gas station just outside the park has been closed for a while. Wanna know why? There have been negotiations going on to decide who will run it before the pumps are active again. In the meantime you can see the work that is being done on the holding tanks. So first one to report that the pumps are up and running wins a Cupie Doll.

Whaazat? A developer has a dream of building a complex at the site of the old Jamestown Mine off Highway 108 near Sonora. A project application has been submitted the Community Resources at Tuolumne County. The new facility will be comprised of a couple dozen youth baseball fields, a bowling alley, a movie house, almost 2,000 hotel rooms, retail space, a focused town center, amphitheater, an assisted living center and an Alzheimer’s care unit. All this on about 800 acres. And if you like the look of Butchart Gardens on Victoria Island, BC, they hope to get approval to build a 65-acre site, with trees and foliage to marvel at.
