Update on news from Yosemite

Things for you to be cognizant of:

The senior pass that the NPS has had for about 20 years is going up in price. On August 27, the fee will be $80 vs $10 now.

If you are 62, not only do you get Medicare and discounted admission to movies…but you can get a lifetime pass to any Federal park, Forest, BLM and others.  One time charge for $10 …but you better go quick like a bunny.

The Trump Administration just reached deeper into your pocket. It’s still a good deal, since your whole car can get in with your pass. You can get yours at any gate that takes money. Or you can go on-line for $10 more.  And yes, they do check your ID when going in. They don’t want geezers who had fake licenses as kids to sneak in.

Auto traffic has been at a standstill on weekends. Stories of 2-hour rides to get to the east end of the park are common. THEN you may have a 1-hr hunt for a parking place. 4-Million historically came to the park but in 2016 it was 5-million. Too many people on earth – yes, 7 billion adds up.…

Head-on Crash kills 5 on major Yosemite approach road

Highway 120 east of Groveland, CA was the scene of a major vehicle accident last night. A Mercedes SUV and a Nissan met with fatal results. 5 people were killed and 2 had major injuries. They were taken to hospitals.

The CHP said one car was from San Jose, and the other from Merced.

One of the cars crossed the center line. Unknown which at this point. CHP says it occurred between the town of Groveland and Ferretti Road. Pine Mountain Lake is accessed from Ferretti Road. The highway was closed for 4 hours and traffic detoured via Ferretti Road. This road makes a long loop around Pine Moutnain lake – it has two entrances to Hwy 120.

Smith Station road is the closest “major” intersection. This is also known as the John Muir Highway – it heads to Coulterville along the route hiked by John Muir on his walk to the park in 1868.

This is one reason I do not like to hike at Yosemite then drive home to the Bay area after the same day. Especially after Half Dome. At dusk, when you …

Grim news out of Yosemite: 2 dead hikers; 1 missing.

The body of Matthew Baldwin, 24, was found on September 6th near Tamarack Flat in the El Capitan Gully area. He had been missing August 24th.

The body of an unrelated hiker, James Michael Millet Jr., 39, was found Sept 1 near the Upper Yosemite Fall area.

Have you seen Tim Nolan?

Missing is hiker Timothy Nolan, 36. He had a wilderness permit to backpack from Sept. 1-4. If you saw him on any of these trails: Happy Isles-Little Yosemite Valley-Sunrise Lakes-Tuolumne Meadows-Lyell Canyon-Rafferty Creek-Vogelsang-Merced Lake-Little Yosemite Valley-Happy Isles, CALL (209) 379-1992.
