Boomers in Yosemite

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing

Born between roughly 1946 and 1964, these Americans are marching on towards retirement. The greatest generation … well since the Great Generation of World War 2.  The boomers dodged lead in Viet Nam, brought us Woodstock, gave us the best music since Moses, put a man on the moon and brought down the Soviet Evil Empire. So we are not talking about Gen X, Gen Y, or the Millennials here. What’s the point, Uncle Ricky?? The point is Yosemite is offering good deals to the Boomers. If you are 62 you can get a $10 pass to the park for the rest of your life!  And you can take anyone else in the car with you. If you are over 55, you can get $2.00 off the Curry Buffett (they do ask for ID’s). And most important – you get the admiration of all the whipper-snappers at the park.

“Why in MY day, we didn’t have Gortex, Polypropylene, PowerBars or hiking boots . . . why we wrapped our feet with leaves, threw a horse blanket over our shoulders and packed some hard-tack and scrambled up Mt. Lyell.” So I say, emulate Jack Lalane: exercise every day and go out kicking and screaming!

In park news, they have completed the February 1 snow surveys. The water content of the snowpack stands at 149% of average for the Tuolumne Drainage and 142% of average for the Merced drainage. So the dry January didn’t hurt much.

Wanna party?  The annual Yosemite Winter Club Snowball dance will be ohis Saturday February 12 at the Curry Village. Enjoy a music filled champagne reception at 6 pm, a silent auction, an exquisite four course dinner starting at 7 pm. Then a night of dancing to the band Ja Mama. Wear your high-heeled sneakers. Tickets are $75 a person. For information, call 209.988.6104.

    and that $10 pass?

    it’s for all federal lands!

I can hardly wait — but then, I feel l have to give the difference between that and my $80 annual pass to some neat park partners!

about the discounts on breakfast and lunch at Curry Village Buffet…

it used to be age 55, but about 2 years ago, they raised it to 60!

too many healthy boomers with big appetites after hitting those trails out of the Valley!
