The male record for two men climbing the Nose of El Capitan in Yosemite was set by Alex Honnold and Hans Florine in 2 hours and 23 minutes. They did it last year.  Mayan Smith-Gobat, (New Zealand) and Libby Sauter, (USA) were hailed as the fastest two person woman team to free climb up the Nose. They did it in 5 hours 39 minutes. The previous female record was set in 2012 at 7 hours and 26 minutes.

Mayan is planning to become the first woman to free-climb El Capitan and Half Dome in under 24 hours. Alex Honnold has done El Cap AND Half Dome AND Mt Watkins in under 24 hours. This was also during a busy 2012.

The women climbed on September 29, well before the shutdown. October is a prime time for climbers. The weather is stellar. I have read of some renegade climbers who want to go up anyway. They hope once they are up, they can’t be caught. A ticket will await them at the top. Foreigners are very impacted.

Unrelated thought worth quoting: “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” – Thomas A. Edison
