A new Yosemite Nature Notes is now available on YouTube. This one features our favorite, Half Dome. In less than 10-minutes, Half Dome is profiled as the most unique rock in the world.
It’s not a geologic film, but more an emotional one with the feelings it evokes.
Rangers Sheldon Johnson, Greg Stock and Mark Fincher talk about their experiences on Half Dome. Ken Yager – a climber – talks about how Josiah Whitney said no one would “trod on it.” He was the chief Geologist for the State in 1870. Five years later, George Anderson made it to the top. There are a lot of shots of it. They talk about what it means to get to the top.
It’s a pretty good film as done by Steve Baumgarder. He films the current Nature Notes video series. It’s an inspiring piece and I recommend seeing it.
Unrelated thought worth quoting: “My first view was perfectly glorious. A massive cloud of a pure pearl luster was arched across the valley, from wall to wall, the one end resting upon El Capitan, the other on Cathedral Rocks, the brown meadows shadowed beneath, with short reaches of river shimmering in changeful light.” – John Muir on his ascent of Half Dome.
