Yosemite to hold prescribed burn of undergrowth. All planning for a safe burn completed

Prescribed burns remove fuel

Yosemite is doing a prescribed fire in Yosemite Valley for 2 days on June 18, The burn area is located along Southside Drive between El Capitan Bridge and the Sentinel Beach picnic area.  Over 100 acres to be burned. Watch for smoke…bring gas masks.

In light of the out-of-control burn in the Big Meadow in August 2009 (now scorched earth), the NPS had everyone and god’s uncle sign off. It will be cool and the “fuel” is moist.  The Big Oak Flat Road was closed since the fire jumped Rt 120 in the park. On a High Sierra Camps trip at that time, we had to get to Tuolumne via Sonora Pass. A real pain because things went downhill rapidly.

By removing the undergrowth, future fires do not go out of control. Yosemite is one of a few parks that needs to do these burns.  Anyone with a squirt gun is asked to be on the ready.
