Last Friday, Don Neubacher, the Superintendent of Yosemite National Park showed that he has what it takes to run the best park in the country. He led a small group of office mates on the 16-mile round trip hike – to the 8,842 ft high signature landmark of the Park, Half Dome. They camped in LIttle Yosemite Valley to beak the trip into 2 days. And YES, they had bona fide permits, like the rest of us. No fast lane for anyone.
This was more than a pleasure cruise. Neubacher got to see his wilderness rangers in action. It’s good for him to experience the magnitude and majesty of this hike as he will soon be deciding its future as the NPS finalizes the Half Dome Stewardship Plan. It will lay out the fate of the cables for 2013 and beyond. The alternatives: Permits for 400, 300, or 140 people or remove the cables . The Final Plan/Decision Document is expected to be released to the Public this Summer-Fall.
It’s time to get out of the house and hear tales of daring and intrigue – yes, How to Hike Half Dome. Here is my summer schedule of fun at Bay Area REI’s. REI asks that you sign-up to ensure a seat. Reservations are held until 7 pm then it’s a free-for-all.
