The first winter storm is arriving early in the Sierra. Caltrans is closing Highway 108 (Sonora Pass) and Highway 4 (Ebbetts Pass) in anticipation of snows up top. Yosemite has not made an announcement regarding Highway 120 (Tioga Pass). Snow levels could drop to 5000 feet with a few inches of snow accumulation. Up to 8 inches of snow is expected at 6000 feet. 6-20 inches of snow could fall above 7000 feet. If that isn’t bad enough news, winds of 15-30 mph are likely with some gusts reaching 40-70 mph. And it will be c-o-l-d. Good time to read a John Muir book.
The Yosemite Conservancy gave $9.3 million to Yosemite during 2010 to fund projects and programs. Sure wish they’d pay to put up a sign honoring George Anderson. The park has declined my proposal for Oct 12 to be designated George Anderson Day, so I guess we’re on our own. First man up Half Dome. Atta boy, George.
The park will be having Workshops on the Merced River Plan. Here are the dates/places. They will have a webinar version via WeBex.

Congrats to a good guy – Ranger Danny and Santana Schaible had a boy Oct 1. Danny is a Historical Landscape Architect. Young Lazaro will be hiking Half Dome in just a few years.
At the other “Y” park – Yellowstone, they found the Grizzly who killed 2 recently. It was put down. The last Grizzly was killed in Yosemite in 1895.
If you like drawings … go <HERE> and you tell boot reseller HikingBoots.com about about your favorite fall hike (snow in Yosemite?). Maybe win a pair of Timberland boots. Enter by Oct 10.
Lastly and finally, REI is having their 20% one item sale Oct 7-16.
Unrelated thought worth quoting: “How I wish, how I wish you were here. We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year. Running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears. Wish you were here.” – Pink Floyd
