Half Dome – Yosemite Musing
Last summer, I blogged about a company called 3D Film Factory and their project to produce a 3D movie documentary on Yosemite. It’s director is Karl Kozak. It’s to be a 45-minute show available for licensing from them. They have been quiet and their “fall ’09” target has passed. If you missed it last time around. Go to http://www.youtube.com/3deefilm on You Tube to see the preview. VERY impressive. But you need red/blue glasses to see the effect. Here’s is a frame from the preview showing Half Dome.
Yes, it looks blurry to us earthlings. They are also reported to be doing one on Bodie, the ghost town east of Yosemite. They were a hit at the Cine Gear 2009 Expo in New York, an industry affair drawing hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of industry professionals. Here is the official Press Release from last summer:
San Diego, CA, – 3D Film Factory (3DFF), an innovative company specializing in 3D digital technologies, recently begun production on an original documentary showcasing one of America’s greatest natural treasures in 3D — Yosemite National Park. This breathtaking film will chronicle the history, seasonal cycles and visual grandeur of the park all in high-definition 3D. Like never before, it’ll showcase the park’s best known activities and natural phenomenon; Yosemite Falls, rafting on the Merced river, climbing Half Dome and El Capitan, tracking bears, the giant sequoia trees and the back country. “Until now there’s been dozens of documentaries produced on Yosemite, but nothing in 3D, nothing like this”, said company president Karl Kozak. “What other format can showoff Yosemite like HD-3D? So far all the footage we’ve acquired gives you the feeling like you’re there. It’s nothing short of mesmerizing. You’ll never be able to watch traditional 2D nature docs again.”
In an email update to me, Kozak said they are behind schedule and need to go back to the park this summer to complete shooting. I’ll keep you posted as this comes to fruition.
Unrelated thought worth quoting: “Kodachrome – You give us those nice bright colors. You give us the greens of summers, makes you think all the world’s a sunny day, oh yeah! I got a Nikon camera. I love to take a photograph. So Mama, don’t take my Kodachrome away.” – Paul Simon
