This blog has gotten pretty popular with about 3,000 hits a day at its peak. It gets a surge when something bad happens at the park – like a fall over a waterfall or off  Half Dome.  Oh well, people like gore. Many readers are visiting to get a shot at permits. It’s actually working pretty well with MANY readers giving up extra permits through the site.  Don’t give up – if you are persistent you will get to the top. MANY hikers are giving out extra permits on the trail.  The Rangers are seeing only about 250 actually going up the cables with permits – so many must be trashing them. For $1.50 it’s not worth the time for many to cancel – there is no refund or “rain check.”  When I was coming down recently, this is what the Ranger had on his log sheet – it’s based on  the number of hourly arrivals. It’s a 2:30 pm snapshot.

Here’s the summary:

Before 8 am Day hikers = 39; No permit = 5

8 – 9  Wilderness Permit holders = 2; Day hikers = 18

9 – 10  Wilderness Permit holders = 3; Day hikers = 14

10 – 11  Wilderness Permit holders = 18; Day hikers = 18

11 – 12  Wilderness Permit holders = 28; Day hikers = 18; No permit = 5

12 – 1  Wilderness Permit holders = 10; Day hikers = 43; No permit = 3

1 – 2  Wilderness Permit holders = 0; Day hikers = 0; No permit = 6

 Fire on the mountain

The “Avalanche Fire,” is a lightning caused fire that is burning just above the Glacier Point road about 2 miles in. There is a lot of smoke, so your views might be less than pristine. This is a “let burn” fire;  it will be around for quite awhile. The smoke has been heading into Yosemite Valley the last couple of days slightly obscuring views and washing out the blue sky.

   Free apples

Visitors, are invited to pick apples Wednesday, August 10th at the Curry Village Apple Orchard from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and Lamon’s (Valley Stables) Apple Orchard from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Read a great story on the historic Apple orchards in the current issue of the Yosemite Gazette. They were planted before there was National Park!!

Duck and cover

The Curry Village Rockfall Hazard Zone Structures Project Environmental Assessment (EA) is out for your review. The park lost 220 tent cabins and wooden cabins when a rockfall occurred in October 2008. The purpose of this project is to address the safety risks associated with structures remaining in the rockfall hazard zone at Curry Village. The Preferred Alternative salvages materials for reuse, removes all cabins remaining in the rockfall zone, and allows the area to return to its natural state.  A 30-day public review and comment period is open until September 9. The document is available for electronic review.

I did my second HD trip on 24 July 2011. Talked to the rangers on they way down at the bottom of sub dome around noon and asked how many hikers they had and if I remember correctly it was only about 180. I only remember seeing MAYBE a couple dozen hikers on the way down to little yosemite valley. Hoping to do my third this month! permit permitting!!
