Yosemite ends search for missing plane

Park officials on Friday announced that the search for the plane missing for over a week has ended. The heavy snow and the broad area of a possible crash made searching difficult. An estimated 5 feet of fresh snow may be covering it.

I’m sure the FAA is all over this, but a quick look at a map of the possible route between Santa Ynez and Mammoth Lakes (BLUE) shows that the craft may have been off course. It was reported that radar contact was lost near North Dome (RED). North Dome is just across the Tenaya Canyon from Half Dome. This would have placed the plane far north of a normal straight line path to the airport, unless the pilot was diverting on purpose to get a look at the valley.  Our condolences to the family of Nicol Wilson, the pilot and only one on board.

Unrelated thought worth quoting: “In soloing – as in other activities – it is far easier to start something than it is to finish it.” – Amelia Earhart”
