Yosemite’s Wilderness

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing

The 1984 Wilderness Act of 1984 set aside over 1,000 square miles of Yosemite’s land under congressional oversight. The essence is that citizens need to have places to go devoid of human impact. This area ranges in elevation from 2,900’ to 13,114’ in the central Sierra Nevada.  There are over 350 lakes, two major watersheds (the Merced and Tuolumne Rivers are both designated Wild and Scenic Rivers), more than 750 miles of trails, over 70 trailheads, five High Sierra Camps, and 8 administrative patrol cabins.

For  us lovers of Half Dome, it’s noted that Half Dome is considered as being in the wilderness and that confuses the cables issue. The HD Stewardship Plan will be finished and signed off in November 2011. Keep in mind that taking the cables down is an alternative being looked at.

Yosemite Wilderness averages over 100,000 visitor nights each year.  The Wilderness Patrol Rangers have the primary responsibility for patrolling the Yosemite Wilderness on foot and with stock.  They help insure visitor and resource protection, provide visitor education, assist with emergency operations, and perform the full range of Ranger services in a Wilderness setting. Very  impressive.

My life motto is “Carpe Diem.” Basically do it now! Think you’ll be going to Egypt soon?  Have you said you’ll get there “someday?” Well, someday never comes. Make your bucket list and get on with it. Write down your life list and take steps to do it. I’d hate for you to “kick the bucket” without seeing the Pyramids.

Unrelated thought worth quoting: “As a member of the State Geological Survey I have visited the Yosemite Valley four times: June, 1863, August, 1864, September, 1864, and April, 1875 – and the valley seems grander on this fourth visit than it did on the first.” – Professor William Brewer, Yale College, New Haven, Conn.
