Half Dome – Yosemite Musing
Have you ever heard of Camp Wawona? It’s inside the southern entrance to Yosemite just a few miles. Look what’s available there: Archery, Arts and crafts, Basketball, Climbing Wall, Gymnastics, Nature Center, Ropes Course, and Swimming. Sound fun?? Still no clue???
The facility is northeast of the Golf Course. Back in the “olden days”, before the formalities of the NPS, the land there was bought by members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This was before Wawona was annexed by the NPS, so it is grandfathered. The land was later given to the Central California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists who turned it into a summer camp. Since 1929, they have been having kid’s programs. It is one of several in the USA operated by the church. It is not open to non-SDA people. I think these ladies going up the cables were members of the church.
For a little more raucous time, you might consider going to Burning Man. This is the weeklong artistic / free thinking experience in the Nevada desert 2 hours north of Reno. 40,000 attend with an open mind. Before you wig out on me, I’ve been 3 times and it is a hoot. Go to the website for details. I am telling you this now although the event is over Labor Day because tickets go on sale Jan 19 on the internet. They start at $240 and will go up significantly as the months roll on. If you’ve not been don’t pass judgment. Participate – don’t spectate. You decide.
