Half Dome – Yosemite Musing
Every Yosemite lover should join the Yosemite Association (YA). Otherwise you are a “poser.” For $35 a year you contribute directly to the park and YA’s fine educational programs. You also get 15% any of the books or products they sell – both at the Visitor Center and locations around the park AND on their website. You have time to join up and participate in the annual Spring Forum held at the park. But hurry – it’s Saturday March 27. Call them ASAP at 1-209-379-2646 to join and get your registration packet. Checkout the agenda: A presentation and Q&A by the Park Superintendent. I believe the new appointee, Don Neubacher will be there. Talks on the Ken Burns’ “America’s Best Idea” production, Arts in Yosemite, a How-to hiking pole session, Tours of the Cemetery, and about 10 other interesting subjects. It all takes place in the Visitor Center Auditorium and theater. I am looking forward to a ranger led 2-hour hike up the old Big Oak Flat Road. This is the original road that led into the park. Now a rubble field in spots, it was abandoned as the roads became safer and it is now an unofficial hiking trail. As a bonus I will be signing my book at 4:15 pm. Here is the YA website. See you there. As you may know, YA and the Yosemite Fund are merging. My 2010 renewal notice said to make checks out to “The Yosemite Foundation.” Hmmm, the new name of the merged organization??
Unrelated thought worth quoting: “Gimme a ticket for an aeroplane, ain’t got time to take a fast train. Lonely days are gone, I’m a-goin’ home, ‘Cause my baby just a-wrote me a letter.” The Boxtops, R.I.P. Alex Chilton
