Most of us do not view the YC webcams regularly so it’s a good idea to check them occasionally. Our German office did such yesterday and take a gander at the white fluffy cotton on the top of Half Dome. The June snowball fight will take place on top at 10 am June 11. Choose sides and be ready to toss. … If the cables are up then.
Many of you may not be reading the comments to these blogs or the massive number of comments to the 281 emails to the request, trade or give permits thread. Tip of the hat to Breanne sending the comment she got back from a YNP Ranger about the odds of “sneaking up” off hours without a permit. Sounds a lot what I’ve been telling you. Roll the dice and face a $5,000 fine and/or jail time if you get caught. They also do not want novices to try and go up at night. It’s REALLY hard and different at night. And not advised for beginners. Plus if you get hurt you will lay there a long time.
Here’s what the ranger told her:
We’ve anticipated some un-permitted night-time travel and are curious how much of it will occur. Of course, a small amount of it (while not legal) doesn’t pose a safety risk on the cables due to crowding. Of course, we don’t want to shift the problem to different hours (just like the weekend-only permit requirement shifted the problem to weekdays). We also don’t want to give the perception that we only enforce the permit requirement during the day, because that would result in a shift in the timing of the problem (and is why permits have to be required 24 hours/day). If necessary, we will expand enforcement.
