Save these Yosemite dates: May 22 & June 30

May 22

June 30
June 30, 1864 was when Abe Lincoln signed the Yosemite grant. 2014 is the 150th anniversary. The feds gave California the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias and Yosemite Valley. These were the Earth’s first Public Lands.

They were given back in 1906 – the above were NOT part of the 1890 creation of the National Park.

If you are there, look for events that day to celebrate this anniversary.

The May 1 snow surveys show that water content of the snowpack in the Tuolumne drainage is 25% of average; In the Merced drainage it is 15% of average. Not good. Water (to treat) will be less abundant this summer. Look for streams to dry up fast. Carry more than usual. Filter what you do find. Animals will be seeking water also and will defecate nearby. Giardia and Cryptosporidium will do you in.

Unrelated thought worth quoting: “

“Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out going to the mountains is going home; that wilderness is a necessity…”  –  John Muir

  1. Dean says:

    Those water levels are unbelievable.
.I saw a picture of Yosemite Falls the other day and it looked similar to the flow I saw in August 2011.
