Half Dome – Yosemite Musing
The pioneer of big wall climbing at Yosemite, Royal Robbins, will be at the Curry Village Mountain Store this Saturday to sign (and sell) copies of his new book, “To Be Brave,” He’ll be driving his pen from 4 – 5 pm.
Like Babe Ruth or Y.A. Tittle, Robbins is a standout in his craft. Now living in Modesto, Robbins was the first to summit Half Dome in 1957. He’s been a person of interest to me because he wore glasses during his climbs. I’ve also suffered myopia since age 11 and had to endure “4-eye” jabs all along. I’d like to buy him a soda and chat with him some day. He seems like a nice guy. In October he and his adult son, Damon, read to children at the Stanislaus County Library as part of their Read for the Record program. This is an international program to bring children together by reading books. Hear his reading <HERE>.
Unrelated thought worth quoting: “Well I’ve been thinking ’bout all the places we’ve surfed and danced and all the faces we’ve missed so let’s get back together and do it again.” – The Beach Boys
