Red Alert – Permits every day in 2011

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing

RED ALERT

The park has just announced that permits for going up Half Dome in 2011 will be required EVERY DAY.  This is as we guessed since weekdays in 2010 were jammed. “Some bozo wrote a hiking guide to doing it and now it’s the thing to do” – yeah, but hopefully they are doing it safely now. The process will be similar to 2010 with the National Recreation Reservation Service aka recreation.gov distributing the permits online. The fun starts March 1 at 7 am Pacific Time for May and June permits. On April 1 you can get them for July. May 1 for August, June 1 for Sept and Jul 1 for Oct. 400 total permits per day – 300 for hikers and 100 for wilderness permit holders. If you later have to skip your trip, NPS is asking you to please cancel it so others may use it.”  As we get close, I’ll give you tips on how to snag permits before they vanish. Remember that weekend permits were gone in 9 minutes last spring. Only 40,000 were able to do the hike in 2010 – way down from the 50,000 to 80,000 in the last few years.

So how do you plan?  Got a Ouija Board?  I suggest you book your tent cabin or other accommodations NOW and try for a permit with the rest of the planet this spring. Start to get familiar with the recreation.gov process. You want to be all logged in and ready hit to BUY at 07:00:01 CA time.  If you live outside paradise, er, California, set your calendar and alarm accordingly. For more info click <HERE>.

Keep reading the blog. As members of the Half  Dome hikers club (complete with secret handshake and decoder ring), I’ll keep you apprised of developments. Let’s just hope that the idea of mandatory via ferrata harnesses does not happen.

I’m bummed. They should make a weekday exclusion for midnight hikers. No permits required if on the trail from 8pm and down the cables by 8am. Only crazies like me who have done HD 7x since 2005 dare hiking in the dark.

    • john says:

Well, the rangers all head back to the valley long before 8pm. So, there will be no supervision on the trails, and of course no crowding so late. I bet some people even camp out on top of Half Dome away from bears.

      • AL says:

The problem is do I want to risk getting fined $5000 or 6 months in jail. If the midnight hike becomes popular to rogue hikers, expect a clamp down to happen. Anyway, Cloud’s Rest starting from the valley is equally challenging and long also.

Wow 9 minutes in 2010! I bet they’re going to go in half that time for 2011, since almost everyone is now aware about the permit system! In all the rush, I wonder how many will take the extra step to cancel their tickets if they decide not to climb.

    • mrhalfdome says:

Agree. But not everyone will want YOUR date. The early bird catches the worm. A formal cancellation plan would make the permit fee more. Al lthey can do is ask folks to voluntarily cancel. A process will be announced how to do it.

Permits everyday, what a surprise. I hate to say I told you so but this was a no brainer. All in the name of safety. What a joke. I’d be willing to bet that more people have died on bicycles than have fallen off Half Dome. $100 anyone?

Meanwhile you can legally do this without a permit.

If you don’t want to click on a link, it’s a guy tightrope walking over Yosemite Falls.

This hike will be shut down or so restricted the effect will be the same. The only people allowed up will be government so they can do “studies”.
