Quiet, Please!

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing

A good night’s sleep is mandatory the night before your Half Dome hike. No partying please. And don’t sit around the camp all night telling ghost stories. I want a solid 8 hours of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) deep sleep. Since I get up at 5 am, that means I am in the sack by 9 pm. I love the Curry Village Tent Cabins. Cheap and close to the trailhead at Happy Isles. Although they kinda resemble newspaper photos of a post-Katrina emergency settlement, they work. BUT they are about 2 feet apart. That means you will be right next to that family from Hoboken. They may be yakking well beyond the 10 pm “quiet” time. Solution: Earplugs. Here’s a shot of some of mine. earplugsI’m surprised to learn that many people don’t really know how to use them. I prefer the soft rubber kind. The foam type just don’t seem to work and they fall out easily. The Xmas tree type are my favorite. I clip the long ends off so I can sleep on my side without the pressure. Make sure they are clean (always wash after each use). Take the earplugs and rub them between your hands to heat them up. Don’t put cold plugs in. Then open your jaw, yawn, and pull your ear back and away from your head. Take the plug and push it into the ear canal. Twisting helps. Slowly. You can feel it “corking” the canal. If it’s not all the way in you will not seal out the noise. When they are in they should not hurt – if so, take them out and try a softer type. I can get them in so far they touch in the middle of my brain. Wow. It is like being in a coffin. I no longer hear the bunkmates snoring, the bears rooting around or the family next door. Ahhh. Serenity now. I set an alarm right next to my head on LOUD for the 5 am reville. Another tip is to use eye shades. I even use plugs at home so I can’t hear Mrs. Half Dome and her portable DVD player humming. I use them on airplanes , while motorcycling and at rock concerts. For an interesting experiment, put the earplugs in and walk around in society to see what a deaf person goes through.
