Half Dome – Yosemite Musing
Today was the network showing of Part 2 of Oprah Winfrey’s celebrity trip to Yosemite. If you had to work, you didn’t miss anything terribly exciting. She actually seemed like a nice person who did not appear to be pampered on her first camping trip – albeit in a rigid camper. I understand that the park was given a week notice to arrange things. The publicity was worth the inconvenience. The Chief of Media & External Relations, Scott Gediman, was the lead arranger. NPS’ poster child, Sheldon Johnson was given a nice cameo.
He rode into Lower Pines on horseback and chatted with Oprah, Gail (her friend of 30 years) and nearby gawkers. He related the Buffalo Soldier’s story dressed in his 1865 vintage Calvary uniform.
The ladies immediately retired after an Oprah cooked sea bass dinner. I suppose the crew packed everything into the bear-proof storage boxes. In the morning, we were given a look at a billionaire in her jammies.
The party then attempted fly fishing on the Merced without luck. Finally, she made a good natured plea for blacks and other minorities to visit the National Parks. It was a well done segment and further catapulted Yosemite into the national limelight. Maybe I’ll invite her to hike Half Dome!
