Yosemite Rangers will soon be communicating via Gmail. The US Dept of Interior recently awarded Google the company’s biggest-ever federal cloud computing contract. Onix Networking Corp was the prime on the award estimated to be worth $35 million. The term runs 7 years. Onix will provide e-mail and collaboration services. The effort will include the migration of more than 90,000 email accounts to Gmail. DOI has been using seven disparate email systems. That effort will be completed by December 2012. Docs, calendaring, email archiving, journaling, instant messaging, desktop video conferencing, and support for mobile devices will also be used.
The contract was initially awarded to Microsoft in October 2010, but Google and its partner Onix Networking sued the DOI over the contract award, claiming it benefited Microsoft unfairly. The suit said that the Department had not considered Google Apps in its Request for Quotation. Microsoft had bid $49M.
