No more permits

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing
How did yall do on your permit quest??  I was in El Portal and had to pay $9 for internet at the Cedar Lodge but got up and was on line for the 7 am stampede. I got a few for Sept and Oct. I will continue to give some out at my talks and thru this blog. I will probably be asking some ez questions out of my book, “One Best Hike: Yosemite’s Half Dome” as an incentive for you to get it. Believe me the royalty is squat, but you need to read how to do the hike safely. REI carries it and you can also go to my website and order thru Amazon.com.  If you didn’t get permits, hike Cloud’s Rest or Yosemite Falls instead.
Sorry that everyone who wanted to do this hike on weekends can’t. So ya gotta burn a vacation day and go on a weekday. It’s worth it. People fly from all over the world to do it! I met a young couple from Berlin who were so excited to be here and they loved Yosemite. More on my 3 days at the park this week. It was G O R G E O U S!!

    Hi there,
I am seeking two cable permits for June 18th. I have no trade permit to offer. But, it has been a lifelong dream for me to climb to the top of half-dome. The only thing that I have to offer in exchange is a smile, from ear-to-ear.

Is there anyone willing to trade my May 31st 2011 half dome cable permit for your june 2 2011. I have 4 permits. Some of my friends will not be able to make it that day.
I would gladly appreciate it. Thank you.

I’m a weekday guy, we’re the next target.
    Thanks for the update.

You’re right, but my main point was that Recreation.gov states the permits are only required for the cables.

I guess we just get to pick and choose what applies off that “official” website.

We all know the intent … It’s not a legal document … they want you to have a permit to go beyond Checkpoint Charlie – the Ranger who will be standing at the base of Sub Dome. Recreation.gov is just the ticket booth. The Yosemite Rangers made up the progam with the Superintendent’s approval.

I guess you could go to the Ranger and plead your logic. Bring a lunch and be prepared to walk back down dissapointed.

Just checked the latest info on the Recreation.gov website. One item of interest is that they are supposed to mail your permit 2 weeks prior to your hiking date.

In a big yellow box it states the following:

“In order to increase safety along the Half Dome cables, all people using the Half Dome Trail above the subdome must have a permit in possession on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays when the cables are up.”

It says permits are required ABOVE the subdome. This makes sense since it’s supposedly a permit to climb the cables. We shall see…

      Andy,

You are WAY behind in reading this blog!! I mentioned the 14 day mailing some time ago and that they will be checking permits at the base of Sub Dome. There was some banter about what if you ONLY want to go to the saddle…. sorry looks like it’s still a permit.

“People fly in from all over the world!”

Yup and it’s worth the trip…I’ve been twice but I still feel a tremendous pull, a strong desire to visit again unlike anywhere else I’ve visited.

There can’t be many better feelings than the anticipation as you cross the Merced at Happy Isles in the cool morning air, ready to tackle Half Dome.

I really should visit someplace new like Zion or re-visit New Zealand but I’d feel I was missing out if I travelled to the other side of the world and didn’t visit Yosemite.
