Half Dome – Yosemite Musing
The National Park Service has selected the new full-time Yosemite Park Superintendent. It’s Don Neubacher, a 28-year NPS employee.
He is currently the Superintendent of Point Reyes National Seashore and has been there for 15 years. This is just north of San Francisco. His past career was as deputy general manager of the Presidio and he was a Park Ranger at Glacier Bay National Park. He’s a NorCal man with a BS from UC Davis and a master’s from Humboldt State in natural resource management. What about Dave Uberuaga? The man who has filled in for a year?
Since he did not get the top slot, he’ll be going back to run Mount Rainier National Park. The transition will last until the end of March. Dave did a good job and I personally liked him. He spoke to me with honesty and candor. He turns over a full load to Neubacher. Issues such as the Half Dome permits, the Big Meadow “controlled burn” fire and the Merced River Plan are among the fun Don will have to sort out. I hope to meet him soon and make sure he is aware of our love for that big hunk of granite.
Unrelated thought worth quoting: “Most people who travel only look at at what they are directed to look at. Great is the power of the guidebook maker, however ignorant.” – John Muir, 1890
