Hello America! RangerRick (not really a ranger) is off on another adventure for 2 weeks. As many of you know, I am a certified American Nordic Walking Assn Instructor. I teach NW on Crystal Cruises. We are going from San Fran to Alaska Monday. Nordic Walking is huge in Europe and nowhere in the states. Basically, it’s walking with poles for fitness. If you do it right, you can burn up to 40% more calories, per a study by the Cooper Institute. We do it around Crystal’s 1/3 mile elliptical Promenade Deck.
Since I’ll be writing the blog from the ship and internet pretty expensive (amazing that we can even get Internet on the high seas.) They will be sans photos. Pix take forever to upload and the meter runs at a pretty high price. But don’t worry, I have tons of stories and Yosemite info pieces in the queue, so keep checking in. I plan to skip most of the shore excursions (been there 3 times) and put on my hiking boots and head to the hills when we are in port. I love Skagway – be neat to hike the Chilcoot Trail, made famous in the Klondike Gold Rush. Ketchikan’s neat. Hope it’s not freezing.
In real news, Sunset Magazine’s May issue has a neat write-up on Hetch Hetchy. There are some nice and uncrowded hikes down there. If you can’t get Half Dome permits and don’t like mobs, head out the Hwy 120 gate and in just a half hour you can be all alone for views almost comparable to the main valley. Also, the Yosemite Conservancy’s Spring/summer member publication is out. Includes a short article and photo of Half Dome – talking about exfoliation and rockfall. Hey, more snow coming to the park Monday – down to 6,000 ft…. Half Dome tops out at about 9,000 feet – you do the math.
A final note – Yosemite had a 4.4% increase in visitors from 2009 to 2010.
