Money found to restore Yosemite’s Mariposa Grove.

Congress is now allocating $15M to the national parks to support the Centennial Program, to improve visitor services and support outreach to new audiences. This includes maintenance to get them all spiffy for the 100-yr celebration and beyond. Yosemite gets a million for the restoration of the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias

The park “partners,” like Yosemite Conservancy, will be asked to kick-in $33M. YC is pledging $20M for this work. It already underway near Wawona and it won’t reopen unit spring 2017.

I have folks coming from Georgia next month who will not see them. I’ll take them up to the Merced Grove. Same trees just not as many.

Oh, by the way, all the Valley hard-lodging is full already for May. We had a choice of staying in El Portal or at Wawona. We chose the latter. I’ve eaten there but not stayed.  I guess I should have said “The Big Trees” hotel.

No further word about the name changes as of press time.  The media has been silent. The Outside magazine article seems to have shaken the bee hive to help draw eyes to the situation. The owner of DNC is trying to get other trademarks at other parks.
