Merced River Plan – Preferred Alternative – Salient Item 4 – Parking

Under the preferred Alternative #5, parking will be modified at Yosemite. The current DNC Office and the Garage will be eliminated to allow more slots. The Village Sport Shop will be replaced with a Visitor Contact Station. The Art Activity Center will be removed. Northside Drive will be redone and all parking will be consolidated with 850 spots. A roundabout (traffic circle) will be constructed at the intersection of Northside Drive and Village Drive. A new day use parking lot with 300 slots will be made west of Yosemite Lodge. 100 spaces will be built in West Yosemite Valley and 200 more at El Portal. The grand total of parking spaces in East Yosemite Valley would be 5,300; an 11% increase. This would yield the ability to host 19,000 visitors in East Yosemite Valley.

Here’s a biggie – a pedestrian underpass would be built at the Yosemite Falls intersection. Some familiar services will be eliminated. To be removed: the Yosemite Lodge convenience shop, the nature shop, Post Office, swimming pool, bike rentals, and snack stand.

All and all, considering the task, I think the park did a pretty good job wityh this alternative. They had to protect the river and they seemed to have cut the fat.
