Half Dome – Yosemite Musing

The Sacramento Bee had a nice story about a woman named Pamela O’Kane. Seems a few years back she was in top form but in 2006 “…She lost weight and muscle mass. She developed facial pain, jaw problems, difficulty speaking. Then trouble walking, twitching in her face, tingling in her arms and legs. Her doctors variously thought it might be multiple sclerosis, Guillain-Barre syndrome, or ALS.” Yikes.
It seems she may have actually been suffering from the tick borne Lyme disease. Here’s the connection: she decided to try recovering by training to hike Half Dome. She did the summit in 2008 and then in 2009. While not “cured” (she still has residual neurological difficulties) she has not let things slow her down. She is a member of Team USA – and is at the World Triathlon Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Need motivaton as you train for Half Dome? Think of Ms. OKane. Unrelated thought worth quoting: “A vigorous five-mile walk will do more good for an unhappy but otherwise healthy adult than all the medicine and psychology in the world.” – Paul Dudley White
