Half Dome – Yosemite Musing
Now what were we talking about? Oh yeah, Alzheimer’s. A 20-year study just out sheds light on the value of exercise in slowing the effects of this terrible disease. My late mother suffered the early stages of dementia before she died. It sucks. I’m sure you all know someone with this bugger. With 72 million baby boomers heading to the sunset, medical science has go to solve this. The good thing is the doctors need to fix it for them too.
The study followed 426 older adults to see what effects walking had on their brain volume. The pool included folks in all stages of mental capacity. The result: the more people moved their booty the higher their brain volume – an indicator for cognitive health. Participants who walked 6 miles a week preserved their brain volume noticeably over those who vegged out. Good news for us. So keep it up. A mile day keeps the cobwebs away! Rust never sleeps. Hiking is just walking with scenery!
