The Oregon Trail is about 800 miles long. A 33-year old woman named Sage Clegg, from the burg of Bend, OR biked 600 miles of the trail then hiked the remaining 200. She is the first person to cover the entire trail. She did in 37 days.
The trail is being developed by the Oregon Natural Desert Association. It passes through Diablo Peak, Fremont National Forest, Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge, Steens Mountain, the Pueblo Mountains, the Trout Creek Mountains and the Owyhee River Wilderness.
Clegg carried a cell phone and a GPS, and wrote notes to help other future hikers. For safety, she used a SPOT emergency “beacon.” This let people back home know where she was. Others could follow her via an electronic “breadcrumb” movement of her position. She also had a solar charger for the cell. Other basics such as sleeping bag, camping mattress, hiking poles, clothing and rain gear were in her 35-pound backpack.
