Head-on Crash kills 5 on major Yosemite approach road

Highway 120 east of Groveland, CA was the scene of a major vehicle accident last night. A Mercedes SUV and a Nissan met with fatal results. 5 people were killed and 2 had major injuries. They were taken to hospitals.

The CHP said one car was from San Jose, and the other from Merced.

One of the cars crossed the center line. Unknown which at this point. CHP says it occurred between the town of Groveland and Ferretti Road. Pine Mountain Lake is accessed from Ferretti Road. The highway was closed for 4 hours and traffic detoured via Ferretti Road. This road makes a long loop around Pine Moutnain lake – it has two entrances to Hwy 120.

Smith Station road is the closest “major” intersection. This is also known as the John Muir Highway – it heads to Coulterville along the route hiked by John Muir on his walk to the park in 1868.

This is one reason I do not like to hike at Yosemite then drive home to the Bay area after the same day. Especially after Half Dome. At dusk, when you are tired, you risk weaving and ending up like these poor folks did. Airbags and seat belts did not save them.
