Half Dome cables down

A sad day in Yosemite. The cables running up the backside of Half Dome have been secured for the winter.  Trail crews dismantled the 68 pairs of 3-foot pipes that hold the cables up for summer use. The 2×4 boards that are attached to the pipes were also taken down and the gear secreted away to prevent vandalism.

The next time we will see the system up is the end of May 2013. The Half Dome Stewardship Plan will set the process for permits for the future. It is expected to be releasedby December  in a signed-off mode after three years of cogitation. Let’s hope the Wilderness Watch does not assert itself and demand the cables come down.

Unrelated thought worth quoting: “Absolutely no special copastatic effects were used in the creation of this blog.”
