Another exciting Half Dome tale. this one is from Blog Reader Chris T. about his attempt to get up Half Dome the day before “last call.”
“I was one of the fortunate few that had a permit for Sunday. Further, the weather was great as I headed out and all systems were go .. or so it seemed. As I reached the base of Sub Dome, I encountered the sign in the attached photo and a Ranger that said – in so many words – “I can’t stop you, but I wouldn’t go up there if I were you.
He then regaled me with stories of the last two deaths (the woman from San Ramon, and – more vividly – the guy from Los Gatos) to drive home the point. Finally, he informed us that – should we choose to continue – he would need: a) name and contact information for family members and b) height and weight for the chopper pilot – both, ostensibly, in the event that one should fall and die. For me – I was sold at the sign as I have no desire to wind up on the evening news. Besides, I have this urge to see my next birthday. The rock will be there next year; I might not be if I pushed it. Shockingly, others sallied forth. Haven’t heard of any issues, so I reckon they were OK.
Unrelated thought worth quoting: “You win a few, you lose a few. Some get rained out. But you got to dress for all of them.” – Satchel Paige, baseball great
