The Ethic/Age Demographics of Outdoors Fans Nation-wide

Here’s the results of a recent study.

Exercise stats

Exercise stats

The survey shows no surprises regarding age. Except, perhaps, that the under 24-year old group is so small. You’d think that they would have the energy and time to get out more often. But at only 18% they are slacking off. Must be the influence of smart phones and games.  Many they are wrapped up in studies. Middle and older age folks still get out and exercise. they work full-time and you’d think they only have weekends open with family commitments interfering.

The ethnic chart, however reveals more. Why do Hispanics and African-Americans not participate as much? Baseball is being dominated by Central American athletes, and basketball is almost totally black players.

Is it that younger people are focused on those major sports and not going camping, swimming, hiking etc?  Hking is a great exercise. Are you training for Yosemite?

What’s your take on all this?

  1. Maureen L says:

barriers to participation in outdoor activities:

I’m not sure, but I don’t think exercise and outdoor recreation is in our DNA, I think it’s a learned behavior.

    1. lack of $$$

    2. lack of school facilities and opportunities to learn/experience/enjoy

    3. lack of safe neighborhoods and parks near-by

    4. parents who didn’t have experience of outdoors when young and so don’t know how to hand it on

that’s why I’m so happy Yosemite Conservancy is putting good chunks of money into Youth in Yosemite type programs!
