Emerald Pool – Don’t

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing
May9.06 054

The Emerald Pool is a wide stretch of the Merced a few hundred yards upstream from the Vernal Fall edge. The pool is near the Silver Apron Bridge on the way to Half Dome. There are signs saying not to go in that water – and  the 300 foot drop. Well, despite the warning sign NOT to swim there, occasionally people go  in – either on purpose or accidentally. On July 20th a 53-year-old man had attempted to swim across the swift and cold waters of the pool and had become unresponsive. Bystanders pulled him from the water and are credited with saving his life. The man reportedly suffered a two minute loss of consciousness and was revived via chest compressions and rescue breaths.  While that rescue was going on, another near-drowning incident occurred at the pool. Both were saved and send to local hospitals.
Unrelated thought worth quoting: “But don’t forget who’s taking you home  and in whose arms you’re gonna be. So darlin’, save the last dance for me.” – The Drifters
