Half Dome permits – How to Improve your odds.

Cables at half dome, yosemite

Make 2017 the year you get to the top of Half Dome

The Half Dome Cables will be up from Friday May 26, 2017 through Tuesday October 10.

225 “day hiker” permits per day are sold for $8.00 via a lottery you apply for in March. Notification is in Mid-April.

Again this year, I will be offering my video seminar: “How to Improve your chances of getting a Half Dome permit.” It’s 35 minutes and dozens watched it last year. No guarantees, but MANY succeeded.

Enter a comment with your interest and I’ll reply with the process.

I will get your email address off the WordPress notification – it will not be seen by anyone else.

The fee is $5.00. No bitcoins.

Do you have tips for winning the Daily Lotteries? We had a group that all applied individually for the March lottery, but not one of us succeeded on this bucket list adventure.

We are looking for 4-6 people to get in for early July (first week) or august 6-19th!

    • Alexandria,

The lottery is held in March. You need to apply anytime in March-winners are notified in mid-April. To see all the rules, go to my website and click on PERMITS.

Hi Rick, I was lucky to get a campground in Upper Pines in June this morning… at 7:01am. Everything was gone by 7:02am. Now the task of getting permits is the next hurdle. I’m eager to hear your tips. This would be # eight for me, and I don’t want to miss out. Thanks for sharing any suggestions to improve my odds.

    • Don,

I’m a bit confused. You say you are in a campground, but “Everything was gone by 7:02am” What is “everything?” You cannot hike Half Dome this time of year…the cables are “up” the end of May – thru early Oct.

Permits for Half Dome are given via a lottery – you apply in March. So what is it you are asking? If the trail is not closed (due to ice), you can go up to Half Dome….but the cables are not erected into the pipes with boards.

The 2 cables merely lie there. People (idiots IMHO) pick up the cables and rappel up. Two died doing this in 2006 and 07.

My tips apply to the March lottery. So you’ll need to apply then. Winners are picked in April. I’m glad to

Congrats on #8….do it 3 more times this summer and hit double digits.

Rick, what Don means is he has secured a campsite in Upper Pines, and now he has to get the permits for Half Dome for one of the days he is camping. I’ve been in Don’s shoes before and it’s a classic Catch-22. You have to either get the campsites or the permits first, and then hope to get the other to match up with the dates. (Side note: “Everything gone by 7:02” means that the campsite reservation system had already “sold out” or “booked out” the entire month of June in 2 minutes. It’s a madhouse!)

        • David,

You are right on. Chicken and egg. I feel your pain. We all suffer from this. Enter the lottery for your June date – good luck…bad choice – 5,000 people apply for weekends in June. But oh well. If you fail there, use the 2-day mini-lottery. Click on my PERMITS tab. Suggest folks get my You/tube on how to improve your odds. See the email I sent you.

          Carpe Diem,
