Half Dome – Yosemite Musing
Blog reader, James Croxton provided this account of what could have been a disaster at the Vernal Fall foot bridge last weekend. For the last 2 years, a person has fallen into the Merced there and it has taken months for their body to surface. Be careful.
About 1:30 PM on Saturday May 1st, I had hiked to the Vernal Fall bridge. After looking at the beautiful waterfall and cascading waters, I heard that someone had gone for help about a man on a rock to the right of us. The man, in his 30’s, had apparently decided to take a Kodak moment and went off the bridge onto a rock that had accumulated moss and water from the nearby mist. The man realized it was too late that the rocks were slippery from the damp moss. His shoes were not suitable for those conditions and he ended up slipping and landed on his butt 20 feet from the river. Nearby people called 911 to get rangers to help get him. By 2:00 pm a ranger had gotten there and tossed down 2 ropes that were meant to just hold him in place. The man, who evidently felt safer, took out his camera and snapped a picture of himself being rescued. Amazing. Around 2:45 another ranger arrived and threw down a harness and helmet for the man. The ranger then repelled down to get the clown. The whole rescue took about 20 minutes for them to get up. He had been very cold and wet for quite sometime. I hope he will pay for the rescue.
Thanks James. The YOSAR rescue team are pros and they see all kinds of “Darwin Award” nominees. If you see news happening, let me know and we’ll broadcast it.
