New US coin to be issued honoring the National Park Service

The House has voted to fund the creation of a new coin to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. The NPS was created in 1916. Many celebrations are planned including at Yosemite.

The bill will ensure that there would be no additional cost of minting and issuing coins. They will be meshed with standard runs at the mints. There will be a planning period where a design will be selected. You may recall that in 2005, Quarters were minted honoring the states.

Then in 2010 quarters were created with individual national parks.

There is no word as to which denomination will be used, but the 25 cent piece is a large canvas that could be used.
