Caution in Winter

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing

On Friday 3 young mountaineers headed up Oregon’s Mt Hood at 1 am. Then trouble set in. As of today, the body of one has been found and the other 2 are still missing. Mt Hood is an 11,239  ft peak in Oregon.  Not too high, but it can be deadly in winter. Avalanches are common. Luke Gullberg, 26 died and his mates, Anthony Vietti, 24 and Katie Nolan, 29 are missing. High winds and avalanche danger are slowing the rescue attempts. A chopper has been scouring the slopes and a Coast Guard C-130 aircraft will be on scene soon. A few days ago we talked about the SPOT personal locator. Wonder if they had one. Let’s hope the other 2 are warm in a snow cave.

Unrelated thought worth quoting: “Good morning, Campers! I’m your Brother Ernie and I welcome you to Tommy’s Holiday Camp! The camp with a difference, never mind the weather, When you come to Tommy’s, the holiday’s forever! Welcome!” – Tommy, the Who
