Meet the new Secretary of the Interior: Ryan Zinke

Effective with the new Trump Administration, SAlay Jewell was replaced by Ryan Zinke as Secretary of the Interior.  Jewell served  under President Obama.  One major accomplishment was the renaming of Mt McKinley in Alaska to Denali.  That is the classic native American name for the largest US peak.

Of note – she was previously the CEO of REI. No word on what she’ll be doing now.

Ryan Zinke, new Head of Dept of Interior

Mr Zinke is a gun advocate, as you can see form the photo. He  played football at U of Oregon and was a Navy Seal for over 20 years, reaching the rank of Commander. Recently he was a US Representative from Montana.

He’s publicly said said that humans “influence” climate change, but did not acknowledge that human activity is the dominant cause of climate change.

In his first week of work, he’s removed regulations that had barred the use of lead bullets and lead fishing tackle on national wildlife refuges. Hmmm Lead is very bad for birds who injest it while eating prey.

Did you know that we are now up to 417 national parks?  Well NPS week is coming up, so you can hug a …

To see the giant sequoias, just head north to the Merced or Tuolumne groves. Not as many trees, but they will still fit into a photo! Just a short walk off Hwy 120 near Crane Flat. You can even see the remnants of the old drive thru tree.

Be prepared for more summer changes at Yosemite – beyond the DNC trademark situation

The DNC – NPS naming controversy continues on with little leaking out. There are opinions being given by loyal visitors, benefactors, the media and politicians. But still, the Ahwahnee Hotel stands proud. Basically, it stinks.

Shirts on a rack

“Yosemite” TShirts no longer for sale – Thanks to DNC

But wait – there’s more. Remember the Merced River Plan?  It got approved about a year ago. The whole reason for it was a mandate by a judge to stop the damage caused by the park on the “Wild and Scenic” Merced. The plan contains half a peck of paper. Well, things are getting implemented.

Background reading – More on Merced River Plan

If you love the ice rink… it’s going to be moved to . . .  well, they haven’t decided yet.  It will be relocated from near Curry Village…er, Half Dome Village to a place far, far away in another galaxy. Ditto the bike rentals and raft rentals.

For you cowboys out there (Howdy partner). The old grey mare is moving’ on.  Horsey rides are out in the Valley. No more horse riding in Yosemite Valley or Tuolumne Meadows, period. Look down in Wawona for the equine grazing grounds.

Oh, …
