Hike Half Dome
Musings about hiking Yosemite's signature landmark, Half Dome.

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing

As you drive towards the park on Hwy 120 from the west and get well beyond Groveland, you are treated with a spectacular view.  I speak of the overlook on the right, high above the canyon and towards the east. It is the first view of El Capitan and Half Dome off in the distance.  Then you begin the descent and thru the 3 tunnels. The Yosemite Fund is financing a major overhaul of that turnout. The Artist conception above will show what it will be like. A little saner parking and they will clean it up. I’m sure there will be a sign or two to help you understand what you are gawking at.

Unrelated thought worth quoting: “Cause this is thriller, thriller night and no ones gonna save you from the beast about to strike. You know it's thriller, thriller night. You’re fighting for your life inside a killer, thriller tonight.” – R.I.P. Michael Jackson

It's a hard one to spell: Perseides Meteor Shower. The Cosmic Dust cloud peaks this year on Aug 12...but should be visible several days before and after. The higher and darker the better. You should be able to see one per minute. Capt Kirk tells me that Aug 18 would be worth a look. They run a week or so before and after the peak.

To Rick or anyone who knows:
Overnight camping in LYV or multiday hikes require backcountry permit, but what about overnight hiking? Is a backcountry permit required or not? Thanks.

NO PERMIT required if you are hiking.. and not camping. Now, how do yo define "camping?" I'd say if you are sleeping in a bag with the intent of snoozing into REM sleep - then you are camping. Walking when it's dark is not - no wilderness permit required. Multiday hiking if you never sleep is OK. ONLY if you planto "camp." Laying on your back watching alien saucers go over is NOT camping. Go for it! Many go up HD to view sunrise all the time. Save your sleep - it's a big yawner. The neatest part was seeing the shadow of HD on the Glacier Point side. PS... it was crowded on the cables even at 4 am!!
